The Holly King Removes His Crown

Picture
The Holly King removes his Crown
Winter Solstice the first day of winter. The longest night but it also marks the day of the rebirth or return of the sun. The aging Holly King representing the dark and old year will be replaced by his counterpart the young Oak King heralding in the new year.  This painting represents the Holly King passing into the land of myth and dreams.

The Holly King removes his crown as the Oak King heralds in the new cycle of spring and rebirth to come.Or are they two facets of the same Celtic deity? The twinned personality of Cernunnos horned antler god of all wild animals, hunting and fertility. Cernunnos the god of sexuality and consort of the Great Mother goddess.

The forest awakens and a fox looks back as the Holly King fades into the forest between the Earth and other Realms. The snow recedes ready for the Oak King to step out of the shadows.

The painting is acrylic on canvas measuring 30x24ins.
